Fantastic Plants

Click the image above to see one of the most amazing foliage/grass/etc rendering I ever saw, any renderer, any time. To know it was done with sun&sky, mia_material, and mental ray, warms my heart.

Five stars. Times ten.

I totally agree! I didn't know paint effects could do that level of detail. I guess I'll have to take a look.

But what really flabbergasts me is that he rendered those(900 millions tris??) on a 4 gig ram computer in one pass! And the render time is still ridiculously reasonable. I didn't know MR could to that either! I usually struggle with 20 millions faces on a 12 gig computer.

If you ever feel the urge to post some tips on how to achieve that, please don't refrain it :-)

Not sure about the color tone of the ivy(?) on the tree, but everything is spot on realistic and wonderful. Great job!

Wow, this is incredible!

He mentioned using mr proxies :)
I guess if all the grass and other repetitive leaves are proxies...that could cut down on the RAM load a lot?

The closeup of the window, with the dirt spots and everything I could've sworn that was a reference photo...

Beautiful work. I want to echo what the other guy said about PFX. I had no idea one could make Mray + PFX look so real!

Simply phenomenal, let nobody doubt mental ray again.

I am in awe over the render. However i tried rendering 200 million tris on my machine(same specs as his and i ran out of ram)
with everythin as mr proxy and bsp2..i wonder how he even managed to display 900m on his machine...other than the doubts on performance..great job..how do u suppose he got the grass shader to look so good

eheh.......
Alessandro is a big expert and in this work he optimize all. No problem for the time or memory consumption, with paint effects converted to Poly. But in this case little use of MrayProxy as assembly and not mip_binary, because it not good work on Maya, but some tests after this farnsworth work, take good results. Stay tuned.
Bye bye...........

I prefer the vegetation from Alex Romain. In fact this image is totally a "version" from his http://thirdseventh.cgsociety.org/gallery/573528/ image he made years ago.
